Madhukar Mucharla

"I grew up in a family that worked with leather, making drums and footwear. When I was studying for my Master's in Fine Arts, I decided to explore portraits using leather instead of paint, drawing from my childhood experiences. For a class project, I learned traditional leather crafting, inspired by a folk art called Tholu Bommalata, popular in Andhra and Telangana. This exploration made me reflect on my identity and led me to study social discrimination and oppression through the writings of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and Jyoti Rao Phule. My art now reflects my experiences and the struggles I see around me. I aim to highlight social injustices and human rights issues using leather as a medium, honoring its significance in marginalized communities. I view my art as a celebration of the working class, both in art and the economy, and I hope it raises awareness about these crucial societal issues."
